ways. It also shows the dimension from
center

Dimensions:
The total distance outside the ways is
17”
(his
was 15”). The operator side way is 4 ½”
across.
The opposite side way is 3” across. The
‘air’
between the ways is 9 ½” (his was 7 ½”).
The
ways
are 1 ¼” thick.
The center of the chuck to level across
the
ways
is 11”. The swing is debatable… 22”
definitely
clears the ways. A circle drawn at chuck
center
point could be a little less than 24”
before
touching the ways considering the ‘air
gap’ is
also on center.
Voltage:
575 3 phase… The drive motor, rapid
traverse
motor and coolant pump most likely can be
rewound
for 230/460. There is a small multi-tap
control
transformer inside the control cabinet. It
is
wired for 575 but has the connections for
230
and
460 as well.
Condition:
I don’t know if it runs. The headstock
and
rapid
traverse oil site gauges show ‘middle’ of
the
sight glass bulls eye.
Manual etc.
I have a manual and what looks to be a
complete
electrical print.
Other stuff:
It has a ‘chuck’ switch and ‘inch’
switch.
This
is used on our other Gisholts to maneuver
the
chuck so as to insert the chuck wrench.

gears I suspect

1st I swapped the 5 HP
DC
drive control
for the
ram with the drive on the
on
the turret
head. I
chose to swap drives rather
than repair. 2nd
the
clutch slips on the turret
head when
raising/lowering the head.
We just put it
into the
fastest feed to get where
we
are going in a
hurry.
The machine has operated
like this for at
least 8
years and has never
bothered
us.
Everything else works as
it should i.e.
table,
rail, lube pump, way lube
feeders etc
I believe the machine was
made to be floor
mounted and we installed it in
a pit to lower
the overall height of the
machine for (1) hoist
rail bridge clearance and (2)
to keep the table
height lower. Currently our
hoist rail will not
clear the operator station
counterweighted
davit arm on top of the
machine
but it really
does not need to as we only
lift machining
parts – not the Gray’s parts.
The pit depth is
20.5” and the table height to
the floor is
17.5”. If floor mounted it
would put the table
at 38”. Not a bad working
height. The 75 HP DC
motor is mounted on the
working
floor and is
belt driven to the table drive
sheave in the
pit. The DC motor is on a
separate frame so I
would think it may just be a
matter of some
shorter belts if both machine
and motor were on
top of the floor.

A revolving chuck and oscillating grinding
wheel spindle are coordinated with a direct
gear
positive drive. All of the movements involved
with sharpening are automatic.
The Model 600 Automatic Drill Grinder is
supplied with an airdraulic infeed unit that
allows the operator to select the rate of
infeed
and the total amount of stock removal. This
feature, combined with the automatic grinding
cycle, permits the unit to function without an
operator once the loading and operating
sequence
has been completed. This eliminates the chance
of operator error that comes with swing
grinding
large bits. The machine is also supplied with a
tank, pump, splash guards and piping to provide

The basic machine is in good condition. I have 24 new Cam-Rol bearings that I was going to install but decided we did not need the unit as it is really too small for what we currently manufacture. The machine will need a forward/reverse contactor for boom up/down. It will also need a 1/2 HP DC drive motor and electronic controller plus a right angle gearbox and pinion for the boom in/out operation. I would need to spend about $1000.00 to purchase and install all of the parts it needs to be 100% usable. The new Cam-Rol bearings are worth $1000.00 alone. The 12' x 12' means it will weld a tank or whatever on a set of turn rolls that could be as much as 12' in diameter plus |

ran a ‘Bugo’ head with track.
2. It will clamp any thickness from 0.0 to
~.0.250. Air pressure can regulated the
clamping
force.
3. What it will weld (thickness, carbon
steel,
stainless, aluminum etc) is a function of the
welding power supply and head chosen.
We built this unit many years ago to build
16
ga
stainless tanks. We also used it to ‘butt
weld’
sheets of stainless together. We have used
mig,
tig and cold wire tig with it.
It is just a ‘homebuilt’ unit. We used it
last
year when we manually ‘tigged’ some stainless
sheet together.
